Three Sheep by Benge Elliott Jr. has won the popular vote among the 101 visual art pieces displayed in the People's Gallery exhibition at Austin City Hall.

Throughout 2006, visitors cast 1,275 votes, and Elliott's sculpture received 162. Elliott is a retired public school teacher with 28 years of experience teaching junior high school art.

First runner-up in the voting was "La Silla" by Joel Salcido; second runner-up was "Do It Yourself Icarus" by Barry George; third runner-up was "Opus 97" by Peter Bellonci; fourth runner-up was "Golden Lotus" by Cecilia Ling.

As the winner, Three Sheep was purchased by the city for $6,000 and becomes the second piece of artwork to be added to the City Hall permanent collection. Constructed out of quarter-round iron bar and 14-gauge steel, the trio of sculptures will reside on the third floor of City Hall for the rest of the year.

Benge Elliott is a Hill Country treasure who has been designing and creating metal sculpture for over two decades, selling his first piece for $10 at Wimberley Market Days in 1982.

A retired secondary school art instructor, Elliott pursued his knowledge of fine arts with a degree in advertising design and an M.F.A. in drawing and painting. He has an extensive background in woodcuts, silkscreen printing, illustrating and cartooning, and has done editorials for The San Marcos Daily Record for 23 years. His “Hill Country critters,” and unique lighting fixtures continue to be collected and commissioned across the country.

Of himself, the artist says:

What you see is the product of a lifetime of dreaming. I often have people tell me I am lucky to have this talent. More than talent, it is the ability to do hard, hot work over a long period of time, at a high level and searching out the next piece.

The Old Mill Store is Elliott’s home base; the Hill Country flora and fauna his subject matter. Inspiration is always close at hand and ever changing. Elliott’s works bring a smile and sometimes a giggle, and always admiration of his craftsmanship.
